Hand cut the potato into ½" strips leaving the peel on. They don't need to be perfect but should be in close of size as possible.
To get the fries crispy, add the uncooked fries to a medium-sized bowl and cover them with cold water to reduce the starch. Let them sit in the bowl for 1 hour. Drain the water and blot the steak fries dry with paper towels. TIP- you can skip this step if you don't have time but it does increase the crispness of the final fries.
In a bowl combine potato strips with the fine sea salt, black pepper, and olive oil. Toss the ingredients together to coat the fries.
Preheat the air fryer to 380 F for 5 minutes.
This varies based on the air fryer model and size, but only ½ of the french fries will fit in an air fryer at a time. You'll need to cook the fries in batches for the best results.
Spread the fries in an even layer in the air fryer basket, making sure the steak fries do not touch since this reduces crispness if they're crowded. Cook them for 18-20+ minutes, flipping the fries halfway through cooking. Cook another batch of fries if they wouldn't all fit into the basket.
Notes
Air fryer models can vary, our Cosori air fryer cooked the french fries in 18-20 minutes, yours could cook hotter or slower so keep an eye on the fries your first time cooking them.Other seasoning ideas include garlic salt, sea salt and pepper, Johnny's seasoning.Regular table salt like Morton's can be used instead of fine sea salt, cut back on the salt by about 25% since it's stronger than sea salt.Soaking the water for an hour helps to reduce starch and get them extra crispy but it isn't an essential step if you don't have the time.
